Get the keys and jump in the car, everybody -- it's time to go out and chow down.

According to Zagat's 2016 dining trends survey, Americans go out to eat an average of four-and-a-half times a week. People in Los Angeles lead the nation by doing so 5.2 times a week, while residents of Boston are at the bottom, leaving their homes to eat out only 3.8 times a week.

When it comes to the findings of the 9,200 people surveyed, though, that's just the tip of the iceberg lettuce.

The Tipping Point

The national average tip in a restaurant is 18.9%. Boston gives the best tips at 20%, while you've got to go San Antonio to find true penny-pinchers -- residents of that city are the smallest tippers in the U.S. at 17.1%.

The Big (And Expensive) Apple

The national average restaurant bill is $36.30, but don't tell folks in New York City that. They pay the highest average bill ($48.44). At $28.77, Detroit offers the cheapest bill.

Maybe We Should Order In

We often go out to eat to avoid the hassles of cooking and relax. Sadly, the relaxing part doesn't always happen. When asked to name the most irritating part of eating out, 28% said service, ahead of the 25% who cited noise and 13% who chose cost, as well as the 13% who also said the crowds.

A Regular United Nations

Twenty-two percent of respondents said Italian food is their favorite, making it the cuisine of choice, topping American (16%), seafood (11%), Mexican (9%), French and Japaneses (both 7%).

The Hottest Trend

Sriracha is the hippest food trend going, with 31% of respondents saying they love it. That topped quinoa (27%) and ramen (26%).
