Rod Stewart is currently in the midst of a Las Vegas residency set to conclude in February 2015, which means his family is hearing a lot less of him -- even when he's home.

"It’s always difficult for any singer to play Vegas because it’s so dry being in the desert. You’re constantly looking after your voice. For me personally, I do voice rests, so my kids wonder why I’m not talking. Mum has to tell them, ‘Daddy can’t talk right now, he’s working,'" Stewart explained during a recent interview with Vegas Player Magazine. Musing that his 3-year-old son "must think Dad’s gone dumb or something," Stewart added, "The other kids, the 8-year-old and all the way up to the older ones, they’ve had to put up with this for years, Dad’s silence."

In between his dates at Caesar's Palace, Stewart's hard at work on a spring 2015 follow-up to his most recent album, 2013's 'Time' -- and like that effort, this one will feature largely self-penned or co-written material, another deviation from a long stretch in which he relied heavily on outside writers. "Believe it or not, I’ve got 10 tracks ready for the new album. I’ve got songs coming out of my bum at the moment," he laughed. "I just wish I could have had this 25 or 30 years ago. I was enjoying myself too much then."

And once the next record is out of the way, Stewart doesn't see himself slowing down anytime soon. "As long as the voice is there, I’ll keep going," he insisted. "I’ve been really lucky with my voice. It’s stayed in pretty good shape. It gets a bit of a battering now and then -- four shows in six days -- but I look after it as if it were the crown jewels."
