This past week the city of Lawton hammered out the upcoming budget for the fiscal year which begins on July 1st.

The formal vote will occur next week and will have some unique changes that will affect residents of Lawton. Some include an increase of $5 on utility bills, adding a new $15 fee to residents who would haul their own trash to the dump. This used to be a free service. The community recycling program will remain intact and 35 staff positions from the city will be deleted from the rolls.

The one that caught my eye was the proposal to only pick up city trash one day a week. Officials estimate that this would save the city $310,000 per year. Now granted, I do not reside in the city nor do I pay utilities to the city, so my opinion is one of that looking from the outside. I asked around our office and on an "unofficial" poll of Lawton residents, none of the six I asked were opposed to the once a week pick up. They were all in agreement that the bill should not go up if service is cut. There are many other items in the proposed budget for next year. This is just a small item that could turn into a big item.

What do you think? Should service be cut to once a week? Should your garbage bill be decreased since service is being cut to once a week? Answer in the poll below and leave a comment with your thoughts.
