I was looking for things to do for the 4th of July and saw that in Jay, OK, you can celebrate the 4th of July at the "Huckleberry Capital of the WORLD."  I'm not exactly sure what a huckleberry even looks like, but now I really want to go celebrate with them.

Seeing that made me curious about other self-proclaimed Capitals in Oklahoma.  Here's what I dug up.  In your summer travels, instead of saying, "we went to Tulsa," you can say, "we went to the Oil Capital of the WORLD!"  Make sure to put WORLD in all caps (even when you say it.  It really builds the importance. . . .

Tulsa:  Oil Capital of the WORLD
Oil came to Tulsa pretty early in the territorial days and it's been a hub of oil production ever sense.  Tulsa was settled by the Creek Indians and their word for "old town" was "Tulsy."  That became Tulsa, then oil was found and the rest was, as they say, history.  Want to know more about how it got the title?

Beaver:  Cow Chip Throwing Capital of the WORLD.
Nope.  Not a joke.  Beaver hosts the Wold Championship Cow Chip Throw each April.  Yes, it is a thing.  No, we don't talk about it much with city folks.  They haven't been around cows, much less their patties.  They've even trademarked their mascot:  King Cow Chip.

Tulsa:  Meth Capital of the WORLD
Ok, not all titles are fun and fully of joy (cow patties).  Some make us all want to work harder to do better because NO ONE wants to be the Meth Capital of the WORLD.  Tulsa made news about a year ago for having 979 meth labs discovered.  Jefferson County, Missouri was second with 472.

Oklahoma City:  Horse Show Capital of the WORLD
I guess someone had to get the title.  OKC deserves with about 20 horse shows each year.  The OKC Chamber of Commerce says horse shows bring in over $126 million in revenue for the city.  Yeah, I'd want that title, too!

Noble:  Rose Rock Capital of the WORLD
If you didn't know we had a state rock, we do.  It's the rose rock. If you want to see a lot of them, go to Noble.  A rose rock is reddish-brown and looks like a flower boom with the crystals of barite.  If you go to Noble, go hunting for good specimens in the ditches and gullies and you could come away with a prize.

Antlers:  Deer Capital of the WORLD
There are less than 3,000 people in Antlers, but they are more concerned with their deer population and keeping it healthy for hunting season.  Pretty sure you can't go into a local restaurant without seeing a display or two.

Crushing:  Pipeline Capital of the WORLD
I have no idea why . .. but my guess it has something to do with oil.  but, better this title than the next one. . .

Oklahoma (the whole state):  Frackquake Capital of the WORLD
It's shocking to understand that we've had over 780 quakes this year, 222 in 2013 and only 64 in 2012.  Yeah.  There's something going on there.  I don't mind the title, though, if it gets more people to figure out the 'why' and the 'how to stop it'.

Lindsay:  Broomcorn Capital of the WORLD
So, researching this article has given me some interesting information about the world.  For instance, I had no idea what broomcorn was till I read an article about Lindsay.  So, the straw that brooms are made from is actually from a type of sorghum plant.

Perry:  Wrestling Capital of the WORLD
I didn't know we even HAD wrestling in OK.  We do and Perry is where we do it best.

Roosevelt:  Junk Car Capital of the WORLD
There is a great picture series and photo blog of Roosevelt and you can see for yourself why it holds this title.

Oklahoma (the whole state):  Horse Slaughter Capital of the WORLD
Hmmm. . . I'd rather not talk much about this one.  It's almost time for dinner.

Oklahoma (the whole state):  Tornado Capital of the WORLD
Absolutely no doubt we own this title.  Even though Texas has more by number, we beat them in ferocity and average by population and area.
