When my sister Cathy found out I was interviewing Dr. Pol she was so jealous AND so happy for me all at the same time. The first question I HAD to ask him was "How did you ever get into reality television?"

Dr. Jan Pol was born in the Netherlands and raised on a family dairy farm. With more than 40 years of veterinary experience, Dr. Pol is a pioneer in treating animals. He began his career working for a local veterinarian in Harbor Beach, Mich. However, eager to begin his own practice, in 1981, Dr. Pol and his wife Diane started their own animal clinic out of their home. The business continued to grow and they, along with their 10 employees, have serviced thousands of patients since their doors opened.

“Over 19,000 clients have walked through the doors. It sometimes is too busy, but something new always happens, and that’s what I like about this job,” says Dr. Pol.

Now, viewers will get the chance to see the doc in action firsthand as he makes farm calls and treats patients in his very busy clinic. Dr. Pol is featured in the Nat Geo WILD series The Incredible Dr. Pol, which follows the doctor on his routine 14-hour workdays treating both pets and livestock. Additionally, his new bio special, Incredible! The Story of Dr. Pol premieres

Not only the town vet, Dr. Pol is also a family man who kept his family near his passion. His son Charles helped his father as a child in the clinic, and although he didn’t love it, he now views his father differently: “My dad is my role model. He grew up on a poor farm in the middle of a different country. He worked hard and he built, like, this huge, I guess you could say a veterinary empire here in the middle of Michigan through nothing but his blood, sweat and tears,” says Charles.

Specializing in large farm animals, Dr. Pol treats horses, pigs, cows, sheep, alpacas, goats, chickens and even an occasional reindeer. A true friend of the farmer, he works tirelessly to ensure that the diminishing population of family farmers remains in business. And he plays an integral role in keeping farmers’ livestock healthy and their businesses profitable.

With his thick Dutch accent, signature mustache and vintage 1981 “Back to the Future” DeLorean car, Dr. Pol is nothing short of a local legend.

Nat Geo WILD cameras have followed Dr. Pol for 7 years, shadowing him as he saves lives, births baby animals large and small and cares for thousands of species throughout rural Michigan.

In the season finale...The leaves have changed and the first hints of winter appear in central Michigan. Dr. Pol and the PVS crew are still hard at work servicing the farms and small animal owners of Isabella County and the surrounding areas. Spitting llamas, a surly Scottish highlander, and a red heeler who had a run-in with a car are just a few of the surprises in store for these dedicated vets. As they zip through the unforgiving Michigan countryside in their trusty trucks, every day brings a new set of challenges—vehicle troubles included.

The season finale of The Incredible Dr. Pol airs Saturday, September 26 at 9/8c on Nat Geo WILD.
