This is BE KIND TO ANIMALS WEEK across the country, so I thought it would be a perfect time to plug the idea of rescuing an animal and expanding your family.

Yoda (the cat) was welcomed into our family after we had recovered from the loss of Poeme (14 yr old cat and as MEAN as the devil).  Poeme wasn't the best cat in the world, but she was old as the hills and got special treatment for her sheer will to survive.  After she died, it was hard to think about a new pet.  After about six months, we realized that we wanted to give another cat the lifetime of love that Poeme had.  This time, though, we would rescue a cat instead of searching out a kitten or breeder.

We looked at several shelters and finally, we met Yoda.  That was the name he was given by the lady that found him huddled on the corner of the porch of an abandoned house during a snow squall.  When we went into the shelter, several cats begged for attention -- buy Yoda didn't.  He sat, very peacefully, on the top of a cat tree and when we approached, he gave a little meow and invited us to pet him.  Well, that was all it took.  You can see in the picture that Yoda is a happy cat.  He doesn't like sitting on laps, but will if you cover your legs with a blanket.  He waits for me to get up in the morning before he will go downstairs and then finds the nearest blanket or pillow to sleep on.  He loves sleeping on our bed, but he won't if the bed isn't made (yeah, weird).

Our next act of animal kindness was Kramer.  He's a mutt and a fantastic one!  He was a runaway that had no chip or collar.  After about six weeks, the rescue organization put him up for adoption.  Now, my husband HATES dogs . . .but he made a promise to Dillon and stood by his word.

Kramer was around 8 when we got him.  He's an old dog but a dog like Kramer should NEVER be without a loving family.  He's the best dog in the world.  He won't jump on the furniture, he doesn't beg for food, he loves taking walks and he's the perfect gentleman.

Kramer and Yoda are a part of our family and we've chosen to give them forever homes.  While you might think we are the heroes, you'd be wrong.  These animals (and they ARE animals -- not kids) add richness to our lives and bring even MORE joy to our home!

If you're thinking about a new pet -- check out local rescue organizations or shelters and adopt:
